Tohru Adachi is a character in Persona 4 anime and video game.
Adachi is a seemingly bumbling detective who was transferred to Inaba due to an unknown incident (presumably a serious offense). One of the main authorities on the murder cases along with Dojima, he has a habit of divulging critical information to the Investigation Team, making him a seemingly useful ally. Turns out that not only is this all just an act, but he's the one behind the murders.
In the AWA fics, Tohru is one of the people who was given a chance to live a second life in ZeroTopia. Tohru is a student at the AWA Academy and is a part of Class 12.
Appearance[]
Adachi is a young adult, with unkempt black hair and gray eyes. He wears a black suit with a long-sleeved white shirt, a crooked dark red tie, and brown field shoes.
In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, he wears a yellow jacket during his pre-battle sequence. The jacket was also seen in his concept art, and he was seen wearing it in Persona 4 The Golden Animation.
Personality[]
A cheerful and jovial detective, Adachi often serves as the story's comic relief. Like Shuji Ikutsuki, he makes terrible unfunny jokes and puns that only someone without a sense of humor would enjoy. He jokingly refers to himself as the "slave" of Dojima, complaining of the workload that his partner piles on him. Adachi is shown to be rather lazy, even encouraging Nanako to take shortcuts in her homework. Adachi also often accidentally (and sometimes purposely) blurts out the police investigation results to the Investigation Team, much to his own chagrin. He can be seen hanging around Junes Department Store, usually "killing time." His actions in public hide his normal thoughts and desires however.
His true nature is that of a sadistic misanthrope who manipulates others for his own amusement, acting as if everything was a game and doesn't seem to care about the consequence of his actions. When he was younger, his parents only cared about his grades in school, resulting in an aloof upbringing without many friends. Due to the hard work in his youth, Adachi feels that he should be entitled to success in life. Because of his lot in life, Adachi blames society for the misfortunes that befell him. Much like how Yosuke was, Adachi grew bored of the life he lived in the quiet country life of Inaba This was what motivated him to instigate his cat-and-mouse game, as he simply wanted to uplift his boredom, even describing his experience pushing Mitsuo Kubo into the Midnight Channel as a "kick." He views his reasons for what he's doing as justifiable, saying that he wants to save and prevent humanity from the pain, suffering, boredom and despair of life.
Regarding his relationships with the people around him, Adachi does not seem keen on hanging around or depending on others, believing that true freedom lies in solitude. Being treated with empathy and kindness confuses him, due to his lack of friends in his youth. He has a lack of empathy for others, whether it be his victims or their loved ones, and encourages Yu to adopt a similar mindset to look out for oneself. Should Yu personally confront Adachi, the latter would only refute that it was Yu's decision to befriend Adachi that betrayed him, rather than Adachi himself. Despite this, Adachi does express in his letter to Yu fondness for his life with the Dojimas, showing that he does show some appreciation for the values of friendship that he often scoffs at. Whenever Adachi upsets Nanako by antagonising Yu, he would try to uplift her spirits, as shown by performing a magic trick for her.
After Ameno-Sagiri's defeat, Adachi accepts his defeat and willingly return to the real world to answer for his crimes. He then acknowledges that had he been more like Yu and his friends, his life would have been much more fortunate.
Later, in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, he retains his habit of taunting the cast, but also retains his cheerful, nonchalant attitude. The actions of the Investigation Team appear to have made an impact on him as well; he is very adamant in trying to atone for his past crimes and shows an immense amount of selflessness by attempting to destroy the Persona Fragments that Sho had collected and assisting Yu in defeating Hi-no-Kagutsuchi. In addition, although Adachi won't admit it out loud, he genuinely values his friendship with Dojima; smiling when Dojima came to visit him in prison and almost losing his temper when the middle-aged detective began insulting him.
Abilities[]
Adachi's playstyle can be described as a mixture between Rushdown and Grappler. He is heavily dependent on his Persona Magatsu Izanagi, and most of his normals aren't safe to use and leave him out in the open, combined with the fact that he also needs most of his SP moves to help continue his higher damaging combos does somewhat hurt Adachi. His normal C attacks, which lead into somewhat violent grab animations, are both usually used as combo enders, and his gunshots are mostly used to squeeze out some small damage at the end. Out of all of his supers, two of them stand out the most: Heat Riser and Magatsu Mandala. Upon using Heat Riser, an icon of himself appears above his SP gauge which represents that, for the remainder of the round (or until his Persona is broken), Adachi will recieve 10% increase in damage and defense. With Magatsu Mandala, a small icon of Magatsu Izanagi will appear above his SP gauge, also applied for the current round or until a Persona break. Once this happens, all of Adachi's Persona moves will have the ability of inflicting a different ailment and non-Fatal Counter command throw super, Ghastly Wail, receives a significant damage increase.
His Persona is Magatsu-Izanagi.
Trivia[]
- Tohru is the first character from Persona 4 to be introduced in the AWA fics.
- In the AWA fics, Tohru is currently dating Kanonno Grassvalley from Tales of the Worlds 3.
- His "love for cabbages" is somewhat of an "Ascended Meme;" in the original game, Adachi states he doesn't like cabbage that much and could only afford it at the time due to his budget.
- Adachi's tie was a gift from Dojima. Dojima wanted him to look proper since Adachi never wore a tie previously.
- Adachi carries a lighter on him, but it's only for giving Dojima a light for his cigarette. Adachi himself doesn't smoke.
