Yugi Mutou is the main protagonist of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga.
Yugi is obsessed with games of all sorts. Having grown up playing games by himself, Yugi received the pieces of the ancient Egyptian artifact called the Millennium Puzzle from his grandfather, Sugoroku. Yugi spent eight years trying to solve it. Soft-spoken, timid, meek, and shy, he didn't have any real friends, except for Anzu, whom he's known since elementary school. Two kids in particular, Jonouchi and Honda, are regularly rough on him, but they befriend Yugi after he stands up for them to an even bigger bully. And then he completed the ancient Millennium Puzzle and became the Guardian of the Shadow Games, releasing his "other self" - the spirit of an ancient, gambling Pharaoh - entering into a giant mess involving life-threatening games, thousand-year-old spirits, cursed artifacts, and lots of ancient Egyptian magic. Since it gave him friends and character development, Yugi takes it all in stride.
In the AWA fics, Yugi is a student at the AWA Academy and is part of Class 2.
In the XP4 fics, Yugi is a member of the Heroes Coalitions and is part of Team Idolo. Yugi also attends at the Vanguard Academy as a student.
Appearance[]
His normal outfit consists of the standard male Domino Junior/Senior High uniform complete with a closed buckled collar. His extremely extravagant hair features multiple layers including long blond crooked, pointy locks for his fringe; the rest features a set of five large spikes and two smaller spikes colored black with a magenta sheen along the edges. So far, he is the only character in the franchise to have his hair divided into three colors. He wears the Millennium Puzzle on a lace around his neck. The lace is later replaced with a chain. He often wears a Kaiba Corp Duel Disk on his left arm.
Personality[]
Yugi is kind-hearted and child-like. He is good at games, riddles, and puzzles, especially Duel Monsters. It was stated once that Yugi is the modern day version of Pharaoh Atem.
Yugi himself is naturally demure, conscientious, and friendly almost to the point of naivety which is why he often relies on his alter-ego to take over for him when confronting an adversary. Though Dark Yugi is supposedly Yugi's own past life he and the spirit are so different that they act as two different people. Unlike Bakura and his past self who are enemies, Yugi and his past-self may be different but they are allies, thus no fight for spiritual dominance has occurred and the two have grown into their own beings. Yugi has objected to Dark Yugi's methods when the spirit has shown itself willing to hurt or even kill opponents, over time though Yugi is able to soften Dark Yugi up. Yugi plays conscience to Dark Yugi and Dark Yugi player mentor to Yugi in return, both influences but never repressing the other. As friendship was Yugi's truest wish it is not surprising that he is willing to go to any length to protect or save his friends. Though Yugi's nativity and purity of heart appears to make him an easier target than Dark Yugi, removal of Yugi's soul from his body by the villain Dartz, only served to demonstrate how psychotic Dark Yugi becomes without Yugi by his side.
Abilities[]
Yugi's Decks are most famous for his "Dark Magician". Yugi's Deck probably has the most variety and balance of any other character's Deck in the series, and is sometimes referred to as a Strategy Deck. His original Deck mostly composed of low Level EARTH and DARK monsters, which he supplements with Magic Cards to perform effective combos. The Deck also had Exodia in it, which he used in the first episode to defeat Kaiba, but Weevil Underwood threw them overboard on the ship to Duelist Kingdom, and Joey Wheeler was only able to recover two of them, so Yugi abandoned Exodia.
Trivia[]
