Sunset Shimmer is one of the main characters from the My Little Pony Equestria Girls franchise.

Once one of Princess Celestia's most promising students, Sunset Shimmer's thirst for power and prestige concerned Celestia and created a rift between them. Feeling she wasn't getting what she wanted with Celestia, Sunset fled Equestria through a magic mirror that led her to another dimension: the human world. Through manipulation and fear, Sunset established herself as the Queen of Canterlot High School. Still craving power and dominance in Equestria, she returned to steal the Element of Magic from Twilight, intending to turn the residents of her school into brainwashed minions to invade Equestria and take it over. Twilight follows her, foils Sunset's plan, and takes back her crown. Defeated and humiliated before the school, Sunset is humbled and begs for forgiveness.

Becoming a close friend to the human versions of Twilight's Ponyville friends, including the human version of Twilight Sparkle, Sunset has rebuilt her life and her persona as a better person, and aids the group in defending the human world from magical threats. She keeps in contact with Princess Twilight in Equestria using a pair of magic journals that can send messages to each other; these same journals keep the portal between the two worlds open and allows travel between them when Sunset needs Twilight's help more directly.

In the AWA fics, Sunset is a student at the AWA Academy and is part of Class 1.

In the XP4 fics, Sunset is part of the Heroes Coalitions and is a member of the Rainbooms. She also attends the Vanguard Academy as a student.

In the TWA fics, Sunset is one of the major characters. Sunset is part of the Honor Fighting Force and is a member of The Ragtag of Heroes.

In the DAMNiverse fics, Sunset debuted in DAMNiverse! Of Eds and Magic: Equestria Girls.

Appearance[]

Sunset has a light-amber skin tone with a long red & yellow wavy hair and cyan eyes. She wears a black leather jacket over a purple top, orange mini-skirt and black & purple boots.

She later wears black, leather jacket with rolled up sleeves that had an orange stripe on each one, over a light cerulean shirt with a silk, transparent, yellow skirt underneath it. Along with that, she sported light blue jeans upon her legs, and black, high heel boots over her feet.

Personality[]

Throughout the first film, Sunset Shimmer is shown to be self-absorbed, condescending, manipulative, and dishonest. She frequently insults and belittles others and thinks little of it. According to human Fluttershy, Sunset makes life miserable for "anyone who stands in her way." As a result, most of the Canterlot High School student body is afraid of her. She is also not above making threats and blackmail in order to realize her goals.

When Sunset puts on the element of magic, she transforms into a demonic visage of herself. While in this form, she becomes more ruthless, going so far as attempting to dispose of Twilight. After she is defeated, Sunset Shimmer becomes immediately repentant and apologizes for her actions, appearing to renounce her prior dishonest and unkind ways.

In the second film, Sunset Shimmer has completely discarded her old self and starts believing in friendship, being kind toward others and befriending former enemies. She is also deeply repentant for her actions in the first film, referring to her transformed self as a "raging she-demon". However, she suffers from a lack of confidence, keeping silent in situations she feels it isn't her place to speak up and falling prey to the Dazzlings' taunting. During the final battle, she finally overcomes her insecurities and joins the Rainbooms in defeating the Dazzlings, gaining a half-pony form in the process. By the end of Rainbow Rocks, Sunset starts writing friendship reports to Princess Twilight using the book she once used to communicate with Princess Celestia.

By the third film, while Sunset has managed to fully integrate herself into the group and take mentions of what she did in the past with good humor, she also harbors a fear of losing her school's newly gained trust, and she becomes deeply depressed when she believes she has let them down, despite their assurances. She also becomes increasingly irritated and stressed by her struggles to understand how magic works in the human world, briefly snapping at her friends at one point. When the human Twilight Sparkle endangers her friends, Sunset's anger explodes as she berates Twilight for meddling with forces she doesn't understand, taking her own frustrations and self-doubt out on her. However, she immediately regrets her harsh words and reaches out to Twilight in friendship by the end of the film.

Abilities[]

A former personal student of Princess Celestia (and confirmed for a genius in Sunset Shimmer's Time to Shine), who runs like the wind, handles a sledgehammer like a baseball bat, and launches herself through the air like a javelin. She shows this off in Friendship Games: she's a good enough academic to face Twilight Sparkle in a math-off, and a good enough athlete to compete in, and ultimately win, a motocross event. Twilight is a better scholar, barely defeating Sunset in the math-off, but she's a complete liability at sports.

Before transforming into her winged Golden Super Mode, Sunset uses the same amulet Human Twilight used to collect the magic from her friends. She even name-calls all of the Elements of Harmony in a way worthy of Captain Planet, causing them to converge into the amulet one by one as if on cue. The whole ordeal is somewhat reminiscent of the time when Princess Celestia referred to all of the Mane Six and Pony Twilight gained understanding of their different Elements, which lead to her ascending to alicornhood.

As Daydream Shimmer, her first attack towards Midnight Sparkle is a Rasengan-esque palm strike as both girls thrust their magic charged hands forward and crash into each other in mid-air.

Her powers in Legends of Everfree manifest as being able to hear thoughts. Direct contact lets her perceive the contents of someone's mind.

The power she gains in Legend of Everfree. Touching someone lets Sunset see their memories and emotions. Rainbow's overuse of her own power in one of the later webisodes allows Sunset to read thoughts merely from proximity.
